![]() ![]() American Princess begins when Alice Roosevelt’s father, Teddy, becomes the President of America, and Alice moves into the White House. My Review: Alice Roosevelt is known as one of America’s most scandalous First Daughters. As Alice soldiers through the devastation of two world wars and brazens out a cutting feud with her famous Roosevelt cousins, it's no wonder everyone in the capital refers to her as the Other Washington Monument-and Alice intends to outlast them all. ![]() With the canny sophistication of the savviest politician on the Hill, Alice uses her celebrity to her advantage, testing the limits of her power and the seductive thrill of political entanglements.īut Washington, DC is rife with heartaches and betrayals, and when Alice falls hard for a smooth-talking congressman it will take everything this rebel has to emerge triumphant and claim her place as an American icon. As bold as her signature color Alice Blue, the gum-chewing, cigarette-smoking, poker-playing First Daughter discovers that the only way for a woman to stand out in Washington is to make waves-oceans of them. Synopsis: Alice may be the president's daughter, but she's nobody's darling. ![]() ![]() Source: Netgalley/Publisher in exchange for an honest review. Even that might be an optimistic reading: the post-1918 frontiers of the former Ottoman Empire (one of the four great thrones that did not outlast the “First” World War) are still a suppurating source of violence and embitterment. Increasingly, modern historians have come to regard that bleak November “armistice” as a mere truce in a long, terrible conflict that almost sent civilization into total eclipse and that did not really terminate until the peaceful and democratic reunification of Germany after November 1989. ![]() “A peace to end peace,” commented Sir Alfred Milner, that powerhouse of the British war cabinet, as he surveyed the terms of the Versailles treaty that supposedly brought the combat to a close. ![]() Woodrow Wilson’s fatuous claim about the European war of 1914-18 - sarcastically annexed by Adam Hochschild for the title of this moving and important book - was an object of satire and contempt even as it was being uttered. ![]() 7/7/2023 0 Comments Wilfred owen doomed youth![]() ![]() The poem is structured like a sonnet, that is four quatrains with a rhyming couplet to finish, making fourteen lines. Owen chose the sonnet structure for this poem, no doubt because, traditionally, the form has been used for serious and solemn subjects - death, religious themes, deep love. Owen’s “Anthem” implicitly contrasts with the patriotic songs sung by those caught up in the nationalist fervour of the war. However, an anthem can also be a choral song or religious chant. The one most pertinent to this poem is an unusually rousing popular song that typifies or is identified with a particular subculture, movement, or point of view. Many were poorly equipped and suffered severe combat trauma. As often in war, WWI soldiers typically fought without knowing the real political reasons behind the conflict, and suffered terrible experiences that civilians could not grasp. This classic WWI poem concerns the death of soldiers and the notification their families receive when they die. ![]() 7/7/2023 0 Comments Memoirs by pablo neruda![]() ![]() On July 15, 1945, at Pacaembu Stadium in São Paulo, Brazil, he read to 100,000 people in honor of Communist revolutionary leader Luís Carlos Prestes. Colombian novelist Gabriel García Márquez once called him "the greatest poet of the 20th century in any language." In 1971 Neruda won the Nobel Prize for Literature, a controversial award because of his political activism. Neruda was accomplished in a variety of styles, ranging from erotically charged love poems like his collection Twenty Poems of Love and a Song of Despair, surrealist poems, historical epics, and overtly political manifestos. Esmond was in fact the nephew of Clementine Churchill (his mother, Nellie Romilly, née Hozier, was her sister), not Winston’s, although the latter nobly played the role of uncle to his wayward nephew. Despite the title, Whitford has, in her very first sentence, set us straight. Yet with Churchill’s Rebels, Meredith Whitford, a South Australian author of historical novels, has brought a clear eye and a fresh pen to the early life of Jessica and her first husband, Esmond Romilly. ‘Enough already’, one can hear her American sisters cry. Jessica alone produced two volumes of memoirs, Hons and Rebels (1960) and A Fine Old Conflict (1977) her collected letters ( Decca, 2006) came in at a thumping 700 pages and in 2010, Irrepressible, Leslie Brody’s biography of Jessica’s years in the United States, appeared.
